A typically sleepy second quarter sees substantial growth for Canadian retailers, particularly in terms of mobile traffic and total transactions.

The second quarter of the year is typically slower sales-wise for retailers. Yet Q2 KPIs suggest that retailers featured in this index are benefiting from added visibility thanks to their digital investments.



Key findings:

  • Traffic rose 27% (YoY)
  • Total transactions increased 46%
  • Conversion rates (CVR) for Canadian retailers rose by 22.6%

“Q2 is usually a slower quarter for eCom sales, and a hectic one on the backend as retailers prepare for back-to-school (Q3) and the holiday rush (Q4). Q2 KPIs suggest that retailers in the index are reaping the benefits of their eCommerce investments, earlier than usual.” explains Charles Desjardins, Absolunet Partner and Executive Vice President.

In creating the Q2 eCommerce Index for Canada, Absolunet used data from over 30 Canadian merchants and outlined 5 key performance indicators (KPI) for any eCommerce initiative:

  • Traffic
  • Conversion rate (CVR)
  • Transaction volume
  • Average Order Value (AOV)
  • Revenues

“It is difficult for Canadian retailers to find realistic and credible benchmarks against which they can measure their performance,” said Desjardins. “Which is why we produced the Canadian eCommerce Q2-2018 Index.”
